Title/Author: There’s a map on my lap! : all about maps by Tish Rabe. (The Cat in the Hat’s learning library) Appropriate for grades two through four.
Summary: The Cat in the Hat teaches Sally and Conrad about cartography and the uses of different maps.
Target Grade Level and Subject : Third grade social studies
Overview: In There’s a map on my lap, the Cat in the Hat explains what a cartographer does, the uses of different maps, map symbols, and how to read maps. Students will apply these principles in constructing their own maps.

Rubric for class assignment
Time in library to research reference materials such as beginner atlas
Time in computer lab for research with web site previously bookmarked for quicker access
Poster board, pencils, crayons, markers
Set: Teacher will administer a short pre test on maps. Secondly, teacher will have the class fill out a Know, Want to Know about maps chart. Next teacher will read There’s a map on my lap to the class.
Activities and Procedures
TTW explain to students that they will create maps.
TTW divide the class into three groups.
TLW discuss in their groups how to construct their maps.
TLW construct a map containing the prescribed items
Assessment:
TTW monitor groups at work
TLW use rubric to assess work
TLW explain their work to the class
TTW administer a post test to class.
TTW have students complete Know/Want to Know Chart with What I have learned
Accommodations
No physically disabled students in third grade
Gifted students. Construct map scales showing grater distance maleages.
Learning disabled students. Have a classmate assist them with decoding words.
Remediation
If less than ten per cent of the class has not mastered the material, they must redo the project.
If more than ten per cent of the class does not master the objectives, the entire class must
Review the material before reconstructing their projects. The posttest will be readministered.

Satisfactory if no more than three components are missing. Work is neat. Accurate.
Unacceptable if more than three components are missing. Messy work. Not accurate.
Assessment
Ninety per cent of the students must master the objectives.
