Students work in groups to design either a dance routine or an aerobic routine to music selected by the teacher.
Grades(s) 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12
Subjects(s) Music, Physical Education
Objective
Students learn to put moves to music in order to work out and exercise in a fun way.
Materials
1) CD Player
2) A collection of CDs
(These can include classical music and music enjoyed by the students. The teacher needs to make sure all words in the songs are appropriate.)
Lesson
Students are divided into groups of four. One person per group goes to a box and selects the music that will be used by their group. Groups are given their own boom boxes and a place to work out a routine. They can use hand weights, steps, etc. for the routine. The groups are encouraged to be as creative as possible and to come up with fun moves. Several class periods are needed for students to have enough time to work.
Each group presents their routine on the scheduled day. Students then cast individual votes for the best routine.
The group with the most votes teaches the routine to the class.
Assessment
Students are graded on how they work together and the quality of their routine.
